Since May 2004, Remington Point HOA has sent a team of homeowners to Saginaw, Texas, to participate in the American Cancer Society’s Annual Relay For Life Fundraising Event. This event raises funds for Cancer Research and other programs sponsored by the American Cancer Society.
Christy Montoya, a new homeowner and newly elected Board member, introduced Relay For life to the other Board members. She worked on promoting and recruiting a team of homeowners to participate. In 2004, they had a team of 14 homeowners and in 2005 grew the team to 35 homeowners. Zena Land Development sponsored shirt teams for the race.
Through their efforts, they team raised a total of $4,200.00 dollars for the American Cancer Society.
Since 1993 when Relay For Life began, over $1 Billion dollars have been raised by Relay alone. The money they raised helps provide support services for patients and their families, fund childhood cancer survivor scholarships, gives 24/7 access to the latest cancer information, helps people quit smoking, educates the public and provides educational materials, assists with early detection programs and materials and provides funding for further research to develop new cancer drugs and treatments. Relay also brings people together and unites them with a strong sense of commitment, teamwork and empowerment.
Christy says, “Our community has been impacted by this because each one of us has been touch by cancer in some way. Several of our team members have survived cancer, have loved ones with cancer, and have lost loved ones to cancer. We do make a difference, if not to this world, to each other. We are neighbors, but this team is also a family.”
